We Think...

Everything is Miscellaneous

I’ve seen David Weinberger before talking about his theory on the classification of knowledge and it is both stimulating and entertaining. He has just published a book but if you have some time can ẁatch him giving a talk about it in one of Google’s TechTalks.

He suggests that we have a long history in classifying stuff into single categories (eg planets) but that the digital world enables us to classify knowledge into lots of categories (eg, type of rock, distance from sun, presence of water, etc) and then retrieve the knowledge most appropriate to our need. As well as better information retrieval, the process is democratic.
