Reducing university drop-out rates

February 25, 2008. Posted by Paul in Education sector. Comments (0) so far.

A committee of MPs suggests that the 22% of undergraduate students who are dropping out of UK universities do so because of lack of support.

According to the report, Universities are getting larger, can be impersonal, and fail to provide individual tutors to support students through their degrees.

I suspect that universities aren’t delivering on their promises of support. Those students most likely to drop out – those from poorer backgrounds, with disabilities and with families – have their expectations raised, get to university and end up let down.

Consumers frequently complain about what a drag it is to remember, pack and carry around all the power chargers for their various gadgets. This offering from Ionhub has got to be a winner if it can keep up with all the different adapters.

Sticky ideas

February 8, 2008. Posted by Paul in Information industry, Research. Comments (0) so far.

This short article has some useful tips for making ideas stick. Building on the main characteristics of a ’sticky idea’ – make it simple, unexpected, concrete, credible, emotional and tell a story – it has some great recommendations for research presentations.

One of the main bits of advice, which in reality few of us are going to accept, is to keep it short. This is such a huge challenge when you’ve collected enough data to fill a novel but how about this 10/20/30 rule of thumb…no more than 10 slides, no more than 20 minutes, no less than 30 point font.

Wellcome funding

February 5, 2008. Posted by Paul in Information industry, Research. Comments (0) so far.

No sooner is there a complaint that the British government doesn’t spend enough on medical research, then a private foundation announces a massive increase in its medical funding.

The Wellcome Trust is already a key source of research funds, notably for the Human Genome, but in what is surely a sign of the times will now be offering more money than the government.
